Science In Sport - Welcome Aboard

I'm delighted to announce that, for the 2011 season, I will be supported by the great guys at Science In Sport

I'd always struggled with my stomach over 24 hours, swtching to SIS at the start of  this year with the move to Leisure Lakes was a revelation.

Ooh, Shiny!

Colour matched white components include skewers, hoses,
lock-out cable, pedals, rims, brake levers + calipers, saddle
grips, forks, headset, spacers and even the seat clamp!
It's a few months since I won a beautiful Charge Duster frame for my Set2Rise 12hr solo victory, but it's finally built up. I hope you agree with me in the (many!) photos below that it was worth the wait.

MaXx Exposure - A Fantasic Night Out on the SDW

The 80miles of the MaXx Exposure has always been a highlight in my race calendar, it takes in a healthy chunk of my local SDW and even about five miles of my early morning daily commute! It comes late in the season and the rare opportunity of a long solo night time ride is as much a test of how well I have looked after myself through the season as much of any form in my legs. I also have a particular soft spot for the race as it was my first top three finish in a solo event and the moment I really started to believe I could compete at the front.

MBUK Baby!

A piece on endurance rising and my build up to the Pennine Bridleway Double challenge, stemming from a conversation with Guy Kesteven, as he was pitting for my friend Mike Hall at the 24hrs of Exposure, when we debated whether this was a fun sport or tedious nonsense, and Guy deciding to come out with me and see what it was all about after I tried to communicate the beauty of the endurance ride to him in my engineer's english. This ended up as a feature in MBUK, which I am. obviously, overjoyed about - cheers Guy!

Two Tall Boys on Two Tallboys - BrightonBigDog

The BrightonBigDog is my local race, is organised by my friends and is run around my Tuesday Night Nightride favorite trails and staple routes, so it's always a three line whip in my calendar. This year, tired from the recent race schedule, I wasn't sure a solo was the best plan but was pretty sure my legs would be good for a fast pairs entry so I teamed up with the UK's other Santa Cruz Tallboy riding endurance soloist, 6'3" Josh Ibbett, to make team "Two Tall Boys on Two Tallboys" a team name we were rightly proud of :-)

TwentyFour12: Snap! - 24hr Solo becomes 6hr Solo

TwentyFour12 was a mixed and, ultimately, disappointing weekend for me. I held the lead in 24hr solo for a while, mixed it with the leaders from the start, but lasted barely 6hrs before mechanical failure forced me to retire while racing at the front.

It was a successful experiment in self pitting, showed me that if I focus I can compete right at the front, but that I need to be super disciplined and make sure I am properly prepared to go on to succeed.
My enduring (unhappy) memory from TwentyFour12 2010

Rob's ride report features on BikeMagic HERE

Pic: Rory Hitchens
Last Friday Leisure Lakes Rider, and endurance specialist, Rob Dean set out to dispel his Mayhem disappointment with an attempt on the South Downs Double singlespeed record, and it went pretty well, Rob finished in an astonishing time of 18:41:59. Now he’s suitably recovered, here’s his account of that ride:

Set2Rise 12hr Solo Win

Set2rise would be my first attempt at a 12hr solo, to overcome the disappointment of  being ill for the 24hrs of Exposure 24solo National championships

What a great way to spend a wet weekend in the Wiltshire. After the disappointment of having to withdraw from the epic and spectacular 24 Hours of Exposure with illness, I decided to cheer myself up by heading West to try my first 12-hour solo at Set2Rise, an event that I’d heard nothing but good things about and one that lived up to its billing.

An Interview With Rob Dean

Rob Dean and the unmistakable General Lee
In June, Dave Arthur, editor of BikeMagic.com, came down to Brighton for a ride in the legendary Stanmer Park singletrack and interviewed me to find out more about me, bikes, racing and what makes me tick.

Big In Japan

To my great surprise, me and the General Lee turned up on a Japanese website. The subject; a beautiful bike. Our main claim to fame is, it seems, being massive!

My Bike - The General Lee

My Santacruz Tallboy, nicknamed "The General Lee" due to its unmistakable bright orange colour, was featured on BikeMagic in June 2010. Here's what they had to say about it:

Bluebells - The General Lee Rides Out

I took my new race bike for 2010, the beautiful Santa Cruz Tallboy carbon fibre full suspension 29er, that has been provided to me by Leisure Lakes, out for it's first ride today. I love it :-)

It was the perfect first ride, as I and The General Lee, as my bike has been nicknamed by Nigel, swooped and whooped through the bluebell carpeted singletrack of Stanmer Park. Wonderful. I think I'm going to enjoy riding this bike :-)

Rob's Top Tips for 24hr Solo

This originally was written for a piece from the UK's top 24hr racers, that featured on Bikemagic. Below is my contribution, and how I keep myself going though the personal battle that is a 24hr solo race:
